What could be more British than fish & chips? Despite the fact that it’s battered and deep fried and served up with a side of chips that puts the term “Super-size” to shame, you can’t help but crave it. And when such a craving strikes, there are few better places than Poppies to go to.
Located near Liverpool St, this is going to be my go-to place to line the stomach before a night out. While there is seating, it tends to be quite busy and for fish and chips I don’t need more than a place to rest my tray – luckily the outside tables are perfect for this!
I opted for the cod on the recommendation of the girl taking my order and I can’t say I was disappointed. The massive piece of fish was juicy and flaky and cooked to perfection. The batter managed to stay crispy and dry without giving in to the oiliness that KFC chicken and most chippies’ products have in spades. The chips were thick and fluffy with just a hint of crispiness on the outside. While they were tasty and filling, I would have preferred more crunch. I will say that these beasts of potato can absorb a fantastic amount of malt vinegar which just supports my stomach-lining preference.
Overall, for less than a tenner you get a delicious filling meal that will keep you going without clogging your arteries. It’s hard to ask for much better than that!
