What do you do when you’re a bit hungover in the ‘Dam, starving, and can’t be bothered to cook? Head over to G&T’s Really Nice Place for…well…a really nice breakfast. Recommended by Flip, the ‘Dam CM, it really does hit all the spots.
Now, it’s not really a traditional Dutch place but rather, as the name may suggest, more British than anything else (despite the manager we talked to sounding more American than anything else). It has a fairly simple menu with about a dozen options including a variety of eggs and my personal favourite, French toast.
It also has a range of drinks (and they will spike any of the non-alcoholic options if you so desire) and of particular note is the “Slutty Mary” which is a house-made bloody mary served with a raw oyster. It may not be everybody’s cup of tea but it’s definitely something to keep in mind if you are feeling adventurous and of sound stomach.
My dark rum spiked hot chocolate went down a treat and woke me up for the meal itself. The French toast was spectacular with soft eggy brioche soaked just enough in the cinnamon and milk. The bacon on the side added a salty counterpart to the sweet maple syrup and balanced it out perfectly. If I had any gripes it would be that there just wasn’t enough of it.
I snuck a bite of the other guys’ food and can report the eggs Benedict are worth a shot although I’m with Alex S on putting hot sauce on everything! They also, by random chance, have Frank’s Red Hot sauce which is a welcome change from Tabasco. Frank’s is usually not found outside of the US South and it turns out that one of the regulars is such a fan of it that they now bring it in especially for him. Now that’s customer service!
