Heads Up

Heads Up: A Brazilian Beach in Covent Garden

I like a beach as much as the next guy and the idea of a beach in London is pretty awesome. But in Covent Garden? I’ll reserve judgement until I see how they pull it off but as a heads up here is the press release they sent me. It’s from the guys behind Cabana who have a good pedigree so there is hope that at least the food will be good. Now if only the rain stays away….

Press Release

For the first time ever, the creators of Cabana, the Brasilian barbecue restaurant, along with their friends from Covent Garden will recreate a corner of Rio’s sun-kissed beaches.  The Grill from Ipanema, a Brasilian beach grill complete with golden sand from Brasil’s shores will transform Covent Garden’s Piazza from June 28th – July 13th.

For those who can’t make it to Brasil this summer, The Grill from Ipanema will offer food and drink lovers, families and sun seekers the opportunity to soak up a slice of Rio beach life. The Grill from Ipanema will serve up the unique flavours of Brasil in its very own beach grill.  On offer will be a selection of new Cabana dishes, including flame grilled skewers, chicken coxinhas and cassava chips, while refreshments from Rio come in the form of caipirinhas and batidas, whisked in the beach bar into various fruity concoctions.

During the day, The Grill from Ipanema will play host to Brasil’s iconic beach game, frescobol as beach goers are invited to spectate with a jelly nut in hand.  As with any Brasilian beach, expect a string of one off events throughout the days, from cooking masterclasses to samba workshops, with the full line-up appearing soon.

Cabana’s co-founder David Ponte said: “With Brasil in the spotlight, the pop-up in Covent Garden is a unique opportunity to show London why we’re so passionate about the country.  As a native Brasilian, we want to bring the energy and flavours of the country to Londoners, the celebration of life is hard to find elsewhere in the world.”

Beverley Churchill, Creative Director of Covent Garden London said: “Innovative cultural celebrations like The Grill from Ipanema are exactly how Covent Garden differentiates itself as one of London’s most vibrant and diverse neighbourhoods.”
